FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

As the autumn season casts its golden glow over the land, India prepares to embrace one of its most celebrated festivals – Diwali, the Festival of Lights. This five-day extravaganza, typically celebrated in the month of Kartik (October-November), is a grand spectacle of light, colour, joy, and togetherness.

The Significance of Diwali

Diwali is a Hindu festival that holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It’s celebrated throughout India for different reasons.  In Bengal, the goddess Kali is worshipped, while in North it’s a celebration of the royal homecoming of Rama along with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. For South India, the festival marks Krishnas defeat of the demon Narakasura.

The festival derived its name from the row of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outdoors to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

The festivities of Diwali begin with thorough cleaning and decorating homes, windows and doorways are adorned with intricate rangoli patterns adds a vibrant touch to the celebrations. Diwali is a time for families to gather and reconnect. Special prayers and rituals are performed to seek blessings from the deities. The air is filled with the aroma of delicious sweets and savouries, prepared with love and shared among loved ones.  Children eagerly await the burst of excitement as firecrackers light up the sky, symbolizing the warding off of evil and negativity.

Diwali is a day filled with bright diyas, colourful Rangolis glowing lanterns and delicious sweets.

Diwali’s significance extends beyond India’s borders in countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, and Fiji, each adding their unique cultural touch to the festivities.

For this special time, the Hegemony family, teachers along with students enjoyed firecrackers which added to the festive mood and created a sense of excitement. Also, a personalised greeting card for every student brought the smile on their face.No matter how we choose to celebrate, Diwali is a special time of year. It is a time to reflect on the past year, and to look forward to the new one with hope and optimism. May the spirit of Diwali continue to shine brightly, illuminating our lives with joy, peace, and prosperity.
